HANDICRAFTS AND CONVERSATIONS
6.04.2025. 12.00-15.00

TALES OF TOWELS
18.05.2024.
We celebrated International Museum Day on Saturday, May 18th, at 12:00 PM. At the AK Miķelis Museum's Rural Farmstead, we opened the exhibition “Tales of Towels.” The exhibition featured towels inherited and crafted by participants of the TLM circle “Labieši” and the “Vērtes” studio. Towels have been made and used since ancient times. There have been towels for giving as gifts, for household use, and for practical purposes; towels for Sunday to decorate rooms, and for holidays – for celebrations, weddings, baptisms, etc. Even today, towels are made and used in various ways, both as gifts and for everyday practical use – towels for the face, feet, dishes, beach towels, and bath towels… and nowadays even paper towels. In the Small Barn of the Rural Farmstead, the towels of the TLM circle “Labieši” were displayed. Three of them were made in the 1930s as dowry towels, three were woven around the same time, but the crocheted lace was added in 2023. Some towels are self-woven, while most are industrially produced, as the common project’s goal was to crochet lace. Most of the towels were made in 2017, but some are still being created, with the newest ones being made in 2023. In the living house of the Rural Farmstead, various towels were displayed, inherited from grandmothers and made by the participants of the “Vērtes” studio. Towels: inherited, self-woven, and industrially woven. Lace: inherited, hand-made, and industrially produced. This is the story of the creation of towels, the choice of materials, sizes, and patterns, and the skills of traditional crafts. It is a story that represents only a small part of the processes involved in creating towels; the search for ideas, materials, and patterns; acquiring and practicing skills – weaving, crocheting, learning, making mistakes… and continuing to create.
LINEN SHIRTS AND DRESSES
21.04.2024. pl.12:00-15:00
“Meet Your Artisan” at the Miķelis Recreation Complex invited us this year to explore and talk about linen shirts and dresses: archaeological, ethnographic, and modern ones. Under the guidance of artisan, participants delved into the traditions of wearing and making linen shirts and dresses. They got acquainted with the material (fabric, thread) and the selection of tools. Experiences were shared, and fabric samples and types of sewing needles were studied. Thoughts were given to the choice of attire, its purpose and frequency of wearing, as well as the care of shirts and dresses. In the practical part, participants began to embroider a two-way pull-out sample, where the most challenging part was seeing the threads to count them and make sure to catch the needle in the right place. The time passed very quickly while working together. After mutual agreement, the next meeting was scheduled for May 25th at 11:00. In Latvia, "Meet Your Artisan!" takes place once a year and this year marked its 16th consecutive event. Its essence is to tell a broader audience about people, their knowledge, and skills that have been preserved and passed down from generation to generation. NATURE AWAKENS
07.04.2024.
Spring, Easter, and Bird Days – Nature awakens!!! The AK Miķelis team invited everyone, both young and old, to explore nature through engaging activities, discussions, and workshops: about birds, trees, and plants. In the Small Barn of the Rural Farmstead, visitors could learn about birds that have been designated as the symbol of the year by the Nature Conservation Agency over the past six years, as well as woodpecker species, pigeon species, and the swallow family. Participants had the opportunity to create their favorite bird from yarn. A big thank you to the creative girls from the "Vērtes" studio for their help with knotting, making tassels, and crafting birds. Information and materials about birds were obtained through cooperation with the Latvian Ornithologists' Society as part of the Bird Days event. At the hosts' end of the Rural Farmstead's living house, the AK Miķelis gardener invited guests to identify which tree the cut branches belonged to. As it turned out, willows were often confused with birches, while oaks and maples were surprisingly thin in appearance. At the end of the gathering, Vineta Skalberga, a herbalist and seed nurturing advocate, shared her knowledge of plants in the Latvian farmstead, including their appearance, growth, and culinary uses. Hazelnut scones and horsetail pesto pleasantly surprised visitors' taste buds. A large group of curious guests gathered for the opening celebration of the Rural Farmstead, taking their time to enjoy the surroundings, read, explore, chat, listen, and photograph both themselves and the informative materials. The Miķelis Recreation Complex Museum is a private museum that nurtures and preserves the museum established in the 1970s, while also exploring and telling the story of life in the Zemgale countryside. RECREATION COMPLEX "MIĶELIS" MUSEUM 45
30.09.2023., pl.12.00-15.00
In the 1970s, an idea for a museum was born in the "Uzvara" collective farm, led by Ivars Jansons at the time: In 1972, building research began. In 1975, the first museum building, the "Vimbu" residential house, was moved to the current territory of the Miķelis Recreation Complex from the nearby Brūklāju village. In 1976, a barn was brought from the Bārbele village in the Bauska district. In 1978, the open-air exhibition created by the "Uzvara" collective farm was first opened to the public. In 1991, the Bauska district People's Deputies Council decided to grant the exhibition public museum status in the collective farm area. Since 1995, the museum has been under the careful management of SIA "Uzvara - Lauks". ...and many more events on various dates are worth mentioning and celebrating, but this time we are celebrating 45 years since the open-air exhibition, now the Miķelis Recreation Complex Museum, was first opened to the public. During the 45th anniversary celebrations of the Miķelis Recreation Complex Museum, the entire complex's territory was brought to life, highlighting the historical and cultural heritage, modern knowledge, and skills in managing the land, as well as the ability to rejoice and celebrate. Upon arrival, guests were greeted with an "exhibition" of modern agricultural machinery, arranged by SIA "Uzvara - Lauks," showcasing a small part of their agricultural equipment collection. Anyone interested could closely examine modern farming tools from the outside and inside, even stepping into the machinery cabins. Visitors, exploring both museum collections – the Rural Farmstead and the Antique Vehicles – were amazed by the significant size difference between the 1939 John Deere tractor and the modern-day tractors used in the fields. At the Rural Farmstead, near the carpenter's workshop, representatives from the Latvian Ornithological Society led workshops on making bird feeders and discussed birds in winter in Latvia and their proper feeding. Next to the barn, representatives from the Nature Conservation Agency presented the Mobile Nature Classroom – a fully equipped nature education bus offering an interactive exploration of forests, meadows, bogs, the coast, waters, and their diverse inhabitants. At the campfire site in the meadow, together with the "Bior" institute representatives, visitors explored what lives in the waters of the Mūsa River. In the Rural Farmstead’s orchard, anyone interested could both admire and feed the residents brought by the Rabbit Town team. In the middle of the Rural Farmstead, members of the International and Socially Active Arborists and Tree Caregivers Society taught safe tree climbing techniques. Meanwhile, in the Smithy, everyone had the chance to try using the blacksmith’s hammer and forge their own "Miķelis" coin. Little visitors were especially delighted by the large soap bubbles created by "Mārtiņa burbuļi." For a photo moment, the iSmile.lv photo booth master helped guests capture their memories in the White Tent. DJ Kārlis provided the musical atmosphere and festive mood. We would like to express our sincere thanks for successful and friendly collaborations to: The Latvian Ornithologists' Society and its representatives from the Zemgale - Sēlija group. The Nature Conservation Agency and the Mobile Nature Classroom team. The Food Safety, Animal Health, and Environmental Research Institute BIOR team. The International and Socially Active Arborists and Tree Caregivers Society representatives. The Rabbit Town team, iSmile.lv, "Mārtiņa burbuļi," and DJ Kārlis. But the biggest THANK YOU goes from our hearts to Ivars Jansons and Māris Bērziņš for creating the museum.
ACOUSTIC EVENING
22.04.2023.
The International Earth Day evening was celebrated by the Mūsa Riverbank, near a lit campfire, with torches and candles. At the start of the evening, guests enjoyed a delicious meal prepared by the AK "Miķelis" chefs while soaking in the tranquility of nature and the songs of birds. As the sun began to set, the musical feast was provided by the most natural and authentic of all – the acoustic sensation virtuoso Kārlis Kazāks. Kārlis’ voice and guitar intertwined with the evening bird songs, creating an atmosphere of peace, with the sounds of people chatting gently in the air. Since 1970, April 22nd has been celebrated as International Earth Day around the world, bringing attention to how we use the resources of our planet, Earth. SUMMER SEASON OPENING
02.04.2023.
Spring is here, and people gathered! On a chilly but beautiful early spring day, a group of visitors gathered to celebrate the opening of the summer season. In the first half of the day, in the White Tent, as conversations flowed and hammers clinked, children and their parents crafted birdhouses. Agnis Bušs, the leader of the Zemgale-Sēlija group of the Latvian Ornithological Society, along with his helpers, taught and demonstrated how to build birdhouses and shared knowledge about birds. After the masterclass, the guests left much more knowledgeable about birdwatching and identification, and 45-50 handmade birdhouses were sent off to various locations across Latvia. The afternoon session allowed guests to choose from a variety of topics. Some attendees went to the Watermill building, where, under the guidance of museum educator Sanita, they learned the basics of calculating and knitting the heel of traditional Latvian socks. Others visited the AK "Miķelis" collection of ancient vehicles, where, guided by museum guide Ramunas, they learned the fascinating stories of the vintage vehicles. Thank you to the guests for coming, spending time with us, and to the activity leaders for sharing their knowledge and skills. The AK “Miķelis” museum offers an opportunity to explore life and farming traditions in rural Latvia through visits to the Zemgale homestead and the Collection of Antique Vehicles.
